الجلطات الدموية هي كتل من الدم تشبه الهلام. وعندما تتكوّن استجابةً لتعرض الجسم لجرح أو أي إصابة أخرى، فإنها تساعد على وقف النزف عن طريق إغلاق الوعاء الدموي المصاب. وهذا النوع من الجلطات الدموية يساعد في شفاء الجسم.
لكن قد تتكون بعض الجلطات الدموية داخل الأوردة دون سبب واضح. ولا تذوب بطريقة طبيعية. وقد تتطلب هذه الجلطات تدخلاً طبيًا، خاصةً إذا تكوّنت في الساقين أو الرئتين أو الدماغ. ويوجد عدد من الحالات المَرَضية التي تؤدي إلى تكوُّن هذا النوع من الجلطات الدموية.
